A Program Based on Integrating Sustainability Themes into EFL Extracurricular Activities to Enhance English Majors’ Communicative Competence and Reduce Communication Apprehension

ABSTRACT
The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a suggested program that integrates sustainability themes into EFL extracurricular activities to enhance English majors’ communicative competence and reduce communication apprehension. To achieve this objective, the study employed a quasi-experimental design, consisting of one study group and a pre-test/post-test administration of the study instruments. A communicative competence test was developed to assess five key components: linguistic, sociocultural, strategic, interactional, and discourse competence. Additionally, the study adopted McCroskey’s (2006) Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24) to measure students' levels of communication apprehension before and after the intervention. The program materials comprised ten sessions, each incorporating different sustainability themes and diverse extracurricular activities to provide students with engaging, real-world communication contexts. The results indicated a significant improvement in students’ communicative competence and a reduction in communication apprehension, demonstrating the high effectiveness of the suggested program in fostering accurate and proficient English communication among first-year English majors.
